Since 2015, neighbours in a group of streets in central St Albans have come together at dusk during December through a Living Advent Calendar. The CWARA (Carlisle and Waverley Area Residents Association) is a very active group with a great history of social events. Their Living Advent event has been brilliant in bringing people together of all ages and spreading some festive cheer in support of local charities.
Usually it is a time for neighbours and friends to meet each evening at each Window’s unveiling to chat over a mince pie. This year will be a bit different. In spite of the challenges the pandemic has thrown at us all, CWARA have decided to organise a festive window trail in aid of Youth Talk and Carers Herts that everyone can join in with.
Cathy Williams-Gunn from CWARA shares that we “chose Youth Talk as one the charities we are supporting because of the vital work they do in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our young people. This year has been incredibly difficult for many and Youth Talk have provided a valuable lifeline throughout the pandemic and will continue to do so as we come out the other side”.
Families and children will be able to walk round St Albans’ Carlisle and Waverley areas to see the window displays in their own time, socially distanced, with a festive quiz to enjoy.
Everyone can join and spot the Santa in each window with a Christmas clue to solve.

Youth Talk’s fundraiser, Rachel Simkin shares “the whole team were absolutely delighted when we first heard about the Living Advent Calendar. COVID-19 has stopped all of our community events this year, not only impacting our funds but also the opportunity to raise awareness of our work and come together. The Santa trail between the houses is such a simple, fun and festive fundraising idea. We cannot wait to see all the window displays revealed in the lead up to Christmas and thank all the residents for their hard work in decorating!”
We’d love to stay in touch and keep you updated on the vital work of Youth Talk.
